Tornada´s Wetland
Paul de Tornada
Paul de Tornada is a wetland area, located in the west coast of the country, in the village of Tornada, about 5 km away from Caldas da Rainha.
It’s one of the few marsh areas in the region, and takes a relevant part on securing and preserving local wild life. The marsh has an area of 46 ha, 25 of which are permanently overflowed. Paul de Tornada is a Ramsar Site and thus, according to Ramsar Convention, this marsh is a wetland of international importance, endowed with flora and fauna of great importance, especially birds. For its characteristics and location, Paul de Tornada is a privileged area for the practice of environmental education on wetlands.
Paul de Tornada is covered mainly by Reeds, except in some interior areas where the water is deeper. Some areas within the permanently overflowed zone, particularly the deepest, have no vegetation; however, sometimes these small lagoons have some Cattail growing. On the surrounding margins we can find Yellow Iris, Willows and Rushes. The hills nearby are covered with Pine trees and Eucalyptus.
